So not a full round-up, but a few of my personal favourites, starting with Balenciaga:

Balenciaga Resort 2010
Chanel Iman. I love the peachy colour & cut of the shorts, and the neckline is to die for…

Balenciaga Resort 2010
Alex Sandor. This is sort of weird/trippy… mixing 60s mod and futurism, I feel…

Balenciaga Resort 2010
Floral, shoes, and the skirt!

DVF was another collection I liked:

Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2010
Simple cut, wearable, sweet steppers, and a jaunty bow. Mmm.

Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2010
Alyona Osmanova. Love the colours – I could do without the weird iridescent pocket on the tee, though.

…and Jason Wu, still riding on his Glory Wave from Mrs. Obama’s inaugural gown:

Jason Wu Resort 2010
The colour (spearmint green) is such a bright one, perfect for sunny, happy places. And I also like how the shoulders, while obviously pointed & sculptured, aren’t overtly, you know, big.

Mmm, Gucci:

Gucci Resort 2010
Abbey Lee

Gucci Resort 2010
Lindsay Ellingson

Gucci Resort 2010
Karmen Pedaru

…the much-raved-about Chanel:

Chanel Resort 2010
Jourdan Dunn. Actually – and it may be fashion blasphemy to say so – but I’m not particularly fond of the Chanel resort line. I don’t know, it just doesn’t… strike me. It didn’t feel very cohesive, and some of the patterns were just… weird.

Chanel Resort 2010
Kim Noorda.

…and lastly, Nicole Miller:

Is it just me, or is Resort season sort of a world unto itself? Largely ignored (relatively speaking)? Eh, oh well. *shrugs*

Happy May!
Unfortunately, I’ll be on a [forced] hiatus from the interwebs due to a family trip to PA… 7 hours one way sans internet. Upon arrival, limited access and even more limited time.  😦

Good news: I uncovered a sweet pair of HUGE flares – very 70s-esque… now I just need to stock up on some floaty floral numbers…

listen to the girl as she takes on half the world

Chloe/Prada, anyone?

Ah, Paris. le ville d’amour et lume vrai. Et la temp meillure etre dans Paris est… le semain de mode!!!

Ah, Paris, the city of love and lights… and the best time to be in Paris is… fashion week!

We’ll start with Balenciaga

Drapes, sparkles, silk, all very Parisian; the line screamed sophistication and femininity rather than sci-fi-futuristic.

Balenciaga Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Draped silk skirt with a sparkly top.

Anyway.

BALMAIN
Short, tight bandage dresses; sparkles all about; a definite air of rock chic.

Think I’ve gone over that already… do watch the video, though, c’est fantastique!

NINA RICCI
Again, another write-up from Style.com that I feel really does the collection justice:

“The show might have been his swan song at Nina Ricci, but Olivier Theyskens saw it through with a fierce, surreal poetry no one who witnessed it will forget. Vastly tall, his strong-shouldered women were walking, trancelike, on what looked like an impossibility: a laced-up platform ankle boot with a sickle-shaped hole at the back. No heels at all. Their clothes—everything from strangely flowing pants to incredibly cut suits to probably the best black leather jacket in Paris and evening dresses with swooping, furling skirts—were a tour de force. Between the strange atmosphere, the supersharp, almost Mugler-esque jackets, and the sculpted forms, it rounded up everything fashion-watchers have known Theyskens is capable of, and went even further.

“I was thinking of a nocturnal mood,” he said backstage, trying to explain how he’d orchestrated it. “Not nightclubbing at all. Something moonlit—a bit magical.” Oddly enough, it wasn’t melancholy and never lapsed into the costumey gothic mindset Theyskens once inhabited. Instead, the collection was a proud—if not exactly defiant—series of reminders of the chic, precise way he used to cut a jacket when he was running his own line, a flashback to the corseted lingerie he perfected at Rochas, and an underscoring of the genius he has applied to making grand event dresses during his tenure at Ricci. Backstage, Theyskens was gracious and smiling as he received sincere congratulations for an outing that showcased all his talents, offered many things for many women to wear for many occasions, and was thereby the most mature and salable collection he’s designed to date. Quite why he saved his best till last is a mystery, but Ricci’s management may just be kicking itself for letting him go.”

RICK OWENS started off, as predicted, on a notably dark note… but as the show progressed, the looks morphed into something lighter – “swans”, Owens said.

Short people like me, rejoice! Chunky, funky platform sandals have returned! I love how shoes these days are so outrageous – 7-inch heels, feathers, cutout wedges, wedges with shoe silhouettes printed on them (Fendi)… *sigh*. I do love shoes.

But I’ve particularly taken a liking to platform sandals – the chunkier and weirder, the better! (I’m getting a black pair to go with a vintage lace dress for my winterfest dance… my parents think I’m weird.  :P) On and off the runway, this trend is apparent… and an obvious keeper.

Mod – style from London in the 50’s and 60’s, US 60’s – was great while it lasted. Then we moved on, never looking back.

Or not.

In the late 70’s there was a “mod revival” : you saw people once again whizzing around on Vespas, their short hair not really blowing in the wind (though their fake eyelashes might be), their bright colours stopping traffic.

Let’s take a look at THEN, LATER THEN, and NOW, shall we?

THEN: 1950’s & 1960’s

Love this minidress – next time I’m thrifting, that’s one of my goals.

Streets like this in the 60’s – particularly the iconic Carnaby Street – were where the mod revolution truly began. Little boutiques with new designers popped up left and right, with nightclubs like The Scene, The Flamingo, and the Marquee squished between them. Amp was The Drug; however, it wasn’t made illegal in the UK until 1964. It was viewed as a positive stimulant rather than a dibilating drug like pot or heroin; young mods used it was a way to go clubbing all hours of the night. One newspaper reported “mobs of mods emerging from the club at 5 a.m. with dilated pupils.” Just to give you an idea of the lifestyle.

Celebrities and icons of the time, easy: Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, and (drumroll please!) Twiggy.

Edie, Warhol’s muse, became famous for her style as well as being incorporated into W’s work.

Love the leotard + pearl necklaces, add that to my “Looks to Try” list…

Twiggy: everybody’s favourite supermodel in the 60s. Make that the only supermodel in the 60s. But that doesn’t make her any less amazing. She is the one who singlehandedly brought about a new kind of model:  lean, long, and lithe. And sticklike. And, of course, breathtakingly gorgeous.

Then, in 1979, it was back in full swing (ha ha… Swingin’ 60’s? Eh? Eh? *sigh*. Anyway…)

60’s od & punk rock bands were The Big Thing. There were tons of random little UK or UK-esque bands that would pop up, have their 15 minutes of fame, then sink back down into oblivion. Or, in the case of The Jam or Purple Heats (the code for amp, back in the day), they’d stick around for a while yet.
