For Spring, Alexander Wang deviated from his tried-and-true route of edgy black grunge and rock apparel and opted for… preppy – if a tad abstract – looks “cheerleaders and jocks should’ve worn in high school” (Style.com). The football gear felt very 40s – I think of the Three Stooges – and the striped sweaters and other prep-wear (semi-sheer sweatervests, etc.) filled in the leftover slots. Leather shorts and wool felt almost fallish to me, which is good, because that’s what season we’re wearing now. Who says you can’t take cues for fall from the spring runway?

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Alla Kostromicheva. A ‘football’ look. Or is it baseball? (I don’t know of either who wear capes…)

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Angela Lindvall.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Magdalena Fracowiak. A… cheerleader?

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Natasha Poly.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Lily Donaldson.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Isabeli Fontana.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Abbey Lee. Now those are some leather shorts. (Football gear or sex-shop purchase? You decide)

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Regina Feoktistova. Stripes, anyone?

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Snejana Onopka.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Freja Beha Erichsen. More leather shorts.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Karmen Pedaru. Leater cuffed pants… getting longer…

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Natasha Poly. Minimalistic sweater dress (with a random extra strap). Looks cosy (if you’re Natasha Poly, aka Zero Extra Hips, and can pull it off).

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Hanne Gaby Odiele. Preppy sweater: check.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Karlie Kloss. Gothic sporty chic? Check.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Freja Beha Erichsen.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Abbey Lee. Cheerleaders’ uniforms for the big game? Check.

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear
Magdalena Fracowiak. Players’ uniforms? Check (complete with furry shoulder pads!)

Final thoughts: at first glance I didn’t really like the collection, but when I browsed through all the looks individually, I ended up liking lots of them – mostly for their uniqueness. No other designer has gone the 40s-football and sporty-prep route for spring… yet… So yes, I liked it.

Mmmhmm. Note the lack of towering heels… good for arches, but not so good for people with, shall we say, non-modelesque legs. (Moi, par example?)

Hey all, happy Pi day! (3.14)

(Ever had pumpkin pie ice cream? It’s heavenly)

The end of fashion week has left us all in a stupor of sorts – we’re all wandering around with a dazed look in our eyes, Starbucks in hand, hair in a perfectly mussed bun, with visions of thigh-high boots, sparkling minis, and outrageous gowns dancing in our heads. Aftershock of sorts; like PTSD for fashion addicts (PFWS: Post Fashion Week Syndrome). In the wake of FW, I still have a few bits to catch up on, namely…

WUNDERKIND, whose collection was highly geometric and visionary and… cool.

Wunderkind Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Iris Strubegger

Wunderkind Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Karolin Wolter. Pointy shoulders + gold + structured skirt + ribby leggings.

Wunderkind Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Constance Jablonski. Hehehe, I’m pretty sure I’m in love with this hat. It reminds me of Gonzo in The Muppets’ Christmas Carol…

https://i1.wp.com/www.moviehabit.com/photos/muppet_christmas_carol_150.jpg

Sorry for the crap picture – it was tiny & needed enlarging. Gonzo (left) and Rizzo (right) sporting perfectly worn-in top hats. So the Wunderkind hat is more like a Lincoln hat.

Myf  Shepard. A cross between something from a circus and a classic English trench… paired with jockey gloves…

Amanda Laine. Adding some blue into the mixture there…

Deer-printed dress and a floppy hat.

Vlada Roslyakova. More foresty-themed clothes. (Bambi, anyone? Actually, animals have been popping up all over the runways this season:

Minimarket, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, and Erin Fetherston.

Righto, back to Wunderkind.

Wunderkind Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Hanne Gaby Odiele. Foresty colours now, while retaining those jester tights.

Wunderkind Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Ali Stephens. Cheetah fierce! Haha idk. Love that bag… actually this whole look has caught my eye for some reason. (The feline on the dress, perhaps?) This sort of takes an all-grey look to a whole new level. (The level of ridiculously cool & chic, yet wearable… for a brave soul…)

Wunderkind Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Karolin Wolter. More colour here, still forest + circus.

Wunderkind Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Irina Kulikova. This print reminds me not only of clowns and jesters, but also Alice in Wonderland for some reason. The crazy, slightly distorted checks… hmm. Either that or the wallpaper in some little kid’s playroom. Maybe the carpet.

Ouais… definitely a more eclectic collection, and maybe an acquired taste… but it’s made it onto my List pour la saison. Bravo!

Et maitenent pour les choses aleatoire…

J’ai regardee les films des 1960s… et je reflechis sur les ans. Il a ete un tres bon deacde (haha yay pour Franglais!) Sorry.

I watched some movies from the 60’s, and it’s got me thinking… the 60’s were such a cool time. The clothes (well, mostly – those plaid pants the guys wore, shudder… my dad commented, as we watched a dance scene, “Hey, I had a pair of those!” *cringe* Thanks, dad.) were cool – I love that mod look, except you have to be a twig (hello, Twiggy!) to pull them off. Watching the Twiggy look-alikes run around in short, mod shift dresses with their pixie cuts made me feel oh-so-huge and frumpy. 😛

No caption needed.

Ah, the 60’s…

Wouldn’t you like to be here?

I so want to take a year – or two or three – off and just go places. Europe, Asia, Australia… I’m running out of continents, because – while it’d be cool – I’m not sure I’d really want to go to Antarctica. But yeah. Not just go on a whirlwind tour of Europe – a few weeks – but really spend time in each place, get to know the city (or rural town, I don’t really mind) and really get the feel of the culture. I know, I know, America’s supposed to be the Great Melting Pot, but it just doesn’t have the long history or rich cultural heritage of England or France or Spain, etc… Lord knows how many memory cards I’d need!

Anyway…

Ah, this is turning out to be one of those long, ramblingly random posts. Sorry if it bothers you. Although, hey – I’ve just realised I’ve run out of things (for now).

Ciao!

Ah, Paris, the city of love and lights… and the best time to be in Paris is… fashion week!

We’ll start with Balenciaga

Drapes, sparkles, silk, all very Parisian; the line screamed sophistication and femininity rather than sci-fi-futuristic.

Draped silk skirt with a sparkly top.

NINA RICCI
Again, another write-up from Style.com that I feel really does the collection justice:

“The show might have been his swan song at Nina Ricci, but Olivier Theyskens saw it through with a fierce, surreal poetry no one who witnessed it will forget. Vastly tall, his strong-shouldered women were walking, trancelike, on what looked like an impossibility: a laced-up platform ankle boot with a sickle-shaped hole at the back. No heels at all. Their clothes—everything from strangely flowing pants to incredibly cut suits to probably the best black leather jacket in Paris and evening dresses with swooping, furling skirts—were a tour de force. Between the strange atmosphere, the supersharp, almost Mugler-esque jackets, and the sculpted forms, it rounded up everything fashion-watchers have known Theyskens is capable of, and went even further.

“I was thinking of a nocturnal mood,” he said backstage, trying to explain how he’d orchestrated it. “Not nightclubbing at all. Something moonlit—a bit magical.” Oddly enough, it wasn’t melancholy and never lapsed into the costumey gothic mindset Theyskens once inhabited. Instead, the collection was a proud—if not exactly defiant—series of reminders of the chic, precise way he used to cut a jacket when he was running his own line, a flashback to the corseted lingerie he perfected at Rochas, and an underscoring of the genius he has applied to making grand event dresses during his tenure at Ricci. Backstage, Theyskens was gracious and smiling as he received sincere congratulations for an outing that showcased all his talents, offered many things for many women to wear for many occasions, and was thereby the most mature and salable collection he’s designed to date. Quite why he saved his best till last is a mystery, but Ricci’s management may just be kicking itself for letting him go.”
