We’ll kick the evening off with two interesting – one bizarre, one a good idea – news bits.
1. Berlin police have banned 10 labels for officers, including: red Perry, Ben Sherman, ACAB, Alpha Industries, Consdaple, Lonsdale, Pit Bull, Outlaw, Troublemaker, and Thor Steinar.
Apparently, these labels have become linked to neo-Nazism in culture today, and (with good reason!) the police want to distance themselves from this image, at any cost. Even though, as the Berlin Police Union pointed out, it could hinder their undercover agents if they’re not permitted to wear the same clothes as everyone else, for blending-in purposes.
Several designers (Ben Sherman and Fred Perry, notably) have worked hard to distance themselves especially from the neo-Nazis, while other (Thor!) has strong ties to the group. Needless to say, it can’t be good publicity. (via NYmag)
2. First bikini waxes, now tanning beds: what else will governments try to regulate?
While the bikini waxing thing was a bit out there (just set some regulations!), the newest proposal related to minimum age requirements for tanning seems reasonable to me. Both Texas and Florida have similar bills on the floor. Texas’ would require people under 18 to have a doctor’s note and a parent present, while Florida is going all the way and banning tanning (haha! it rhymes!) for kids under 16.
“Perhaps not shockingly, the Indoor Tanning Association has taken issue with the bills, arguing that they give consumers the false impression that artificial UV exposure is dangerous. But seeing as how 29 states already restrict minors’ access to tanning beds and the World Health Organization recommends that no one under the age of 18 be permitted to use them at all, perhaps the ITA needs to own up, just a bit.” Style.com
A sweet look from Lanvin // Spring 2008 (for which Alber Elbaz received a standing ovation):
…and woohoo, another!
From NAST magazine (en francais!). Love her capey thing and lace tights.
Hmm, what else… a few looks from various designers from Japanese Fashion Week? Pourquoi pas?
