You know that girl who always seems to look great, even if she’s wearing jeans and a tattered white tee? Who just exudes that air of je ne sais quoi? Who everyone strives to be, but few accomplish?
Well, wish away no more, because BWchic brings you Personal Style, A Guide To.
Getting that certain flair can either require just a little bit of tweaking or a complete overhaul, but either way it isn’t impossible; far from it! The way I see it, there’s sort of a continuum of style. It goes something like this:
So you see, it can easily be broken down into four categories. We’ll start with… hmm. Hard to decide, since it is a continuum. Feeling good.
Feeling good in what you’re wearing (whatever it may be) is the key to getting that thing some people have that allows them to glow from the inside out, from their perfectly pedi’d toes to their sleek, chic hair. If you’re comfortable, you will naturally feel better about yourself and how you look. For example: if you love to dress laid-back but have to attend a formal event (a dinner or dance or something like that), you will be supremely uncomfortable, awkward, and generally not good if you squeeze yourself into a practically corseted top and a huge, ruffly, bustling skirted ball gown. Wouldn’t you be much more comfy – and you – in a sleek, minimalistic gown?
See my point?
If you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing – stylistically and physically speaking – you’ll be able to really work your look. Once you get that, you could be wearing a trash bag and tube socks on your ears and people will still think, “Unngh, I wish I could pull that off… how does she do it?” [Answer: because you’ve got it!] 😉
(IMPORTANT EDITOR’S NOTE: not that I recommend wearing a trash bag and tube socks. I don’t care if Lagerfeld himself gave them to you. Don’t.)
Following the continuum, confidence: arguably (sort of) the most crucial element in your quest for Your Personal Style. Confidence comes hand in hand with feeling good; naturally, if you feel good in what you’re wearing, you will feel more confident and more “Hellooo, world! Here I come!” (Have you ever tried on That pair of shoes? The ones that make your legs miles long, your jeans from H&M to Balmain, and your eyes brighter? The ones that make you feel on top of the world and like nothing can stand in your way? Well, that’s how we want you to feel all the time. It’s called being Supremely Confident in yourself, and you probably already have it – it just needs to be brought out. So let it out!)
All of this leads to getting your dose of je ne sais quoi (literally, “I don’t know what”. It refers to that air of, “Yes, I’m too cool and I know it, but I’m not a snob about it” and that something that lets a girl get away with almost anything, stylistically speaking). The key to this step is embracing trends you love while maintaining your personal style preferences; take a few hints and pieces from your latest drool-able trend and incorporate them into your wardrobe. This is what will set your style apart from everyone else’s: it’s all in how you interpret trends, how exactly you rock the latest boots with a sweet vintage find. (IMPORTANT: just because your favorite shoes are last season doesn’t mean you have to ditch them – au contraire! Cling to them! Keep your favourite trends for as long or as short as you like!)
*BE SURE TO: avoid blindly following trends with no regard to personal taste or your body – that’s quite possibly one of the most unforgivable fashion faux pas.
It all cumulates in the final step: LOOKING GOOD. If you stay true to your style, your taste, and your body, you’ll be the girl who, when she walks in, all eyes turn to automatically and people think: How does she do that?
The Continuum continues: LOOKING GOOD leads to FEELING GOOD leads to CONFIDENCE leads to JE NE SAIS QUOI leads to LOOKING GOOD… Once you’re in, there’s no going back. So jump on in and get started!
