Ah, New York Fashion Week – a most wondrous event, non? To begin the coverage, I’ll start off with Herve Leger.
HL’s Fall 2009 featured, as always, bandage dresses with exotic embellishments and intricate details. Bold shoulders were prominent throughout, as well as a few distinct, repeated patterns (subtle and bold). HL stuck to mainly dark and neutral shades for fall.
Love the pattern bandage + super shoulders.
Sexy strappy neckline in a metallic mishmash… gotta love it. With the stark makeup, it creates a dramatic overall look.
Simple, clean-cut white frock. Love how it combines the classic white dress look with a modern subtle print, that really ties it in with the rest of the collection.
Very 80s. Paired with an ‘in’ shoe style (cutout straps mixed with a partial ankle bootie), it modernizes the look.
That seems to be a key thing this season – modernizing and reinventing looks from the past, whether it be a vintage lace dress with a blazer or old designer pieces with trendy new accessories. At risk of repeating cliches, with this economy, reinventing and reusing pieces is nothing to sneeze at. Hmm, maybe I’ll mix that in with further NYFW posts… Vintage. Alrighty, that’s added to my list. But I’m digressing (which is really the correct way to use “digress”, but… I’m digressing.)
The jagged neckline and the fabric blocks made this bandage dress stand out from the rest of the black and grey herd.
HL joins the masses of designers hearkening back to the Roaring 20s and 30s, when flappers abounded. Not a bad thing, not at all.
Again with the 80s – but this is 80s Remastered… or something… semi-fish-scale? Bronze armour? Disco queen?

Ah, nope – this is the disco queen. Love the one-armed look mixed with the 80s, strong shoulders, and metallic trends.
This collection was pretty nice… rather normal, with a few highlight pieces (the strappy neckline dress, the white mini). HL stuck to sort of run-of-the-mill Fall themes: dark colours, relatively safe shapes, etc… Now don’t get me wrong, I do love the collection. It’s just not particularly WOW.
Look du jour (off the runway!):
Mary Alice Stephens outside Bryant Park for NYFW. Love her sculpted dress & amazing chain necklace – huge necklaces are big this season. Photo via JACK&JIL blog.
And from the runway:
Slightly bubbly fur at Preen // Fall 2009. Love the thigh-high suede boots too – if I had a thousand or so (dollars), I’d get the drool-worthy Halston pair. Mais heursement, je n’ai pas trop d’argent. C’est la vie.
